8 Blogging Mistakes and Blogging Lessons Learned

Listed below are 8 blogging mistakes and blogging lessons learned that we’ve either heard or experienced ourselves as bloggers and business owners. of blogging that we’d like to share with our readers. While there may be hundreds of blogging mistakes that you can make, we found 8 that many bloggers have experienced over the years. These blogging mistakes can cost you both time and money. When you’re blogging as a business, make sure to avoid these blogging mistakes:

  1. Skimping on SEO tools: Don’t skimp on the tools! Make sure you’re using SEO tools such as keyword research tools, keyword SEO tools, search volume tools, and various other ranking and research tools for bloggers.
  2. Focusing on blog advertising and blog monetization first: Generate traffic first and THEN focus on monetizing your blog, adding advertising links on your blog, and adding affiliate links to your blog. Spending time and money on affiliate links and advertising can monopolize your time, when you don’t even have any traffic. Many of the companies that you’re an affiliate for might drop you because you haven’t sold anything from them. Since it may take 6+ months to really get your traffic going, focus on your blog and your traffic first and THEN monetize, advertise, etc.
  3. Thinking like a blogger or writer INSTEAD of thinking like a business: Think like a business who has a writer, not a writer that has a business. Your blog needs to be a business and the articles need to generate traffic that will convert into affiliate sales, not just appealing to people who like your writing.
  4. Not building an email list. You need to build it with opt-ins, pop-ups, or some type of lead magnet that will capture emails addresses. Remember, only 1% of eccommerce website visitors make a purchase, so it’s important to get an email whenever you can in order to retarget customers with email marketing, with is FAR less expensive than PPC marketing or even display ads.
  5. Using a cheap website or blog theme: At a minimum, use a great WordPress theme for your website and blog. Don’t skimp on the theme, website builder, or design. You may want to use a developer, but with WordPress, you don’t have to. You can find a top-rated WordPress themes starting at $49 on Themeforest. Your website needs to look professional in order to get guest posts, partnerships, affiliate opportunities, and in order to generate leads, make sales conversions, signups, click-throughs, etc. Make sure your website looks professional, clean, and uses proper spelling and grammar.
  6. Not believing in yourself: it’s easy to quite after 20-30 posts if you’re not seeing any traffic. truth is, it may take nine months and 100+ high-quality posts before you really start to see some great traffic and sales. Some people are able to achieve this quicker with fewer posts and others may take more posts and a longer time to rank. Quitting before you really gave it your all and not believing in yourself is a an easy way to fail. True, there’s no guaranty that you’ll succedd EVEN if you do everything right, but quitting before you’ve really given it a chance and truly given it your best effort is a sure way to fail.
  7. Limiting your niche and only blogging about your passion: Don’t limit your niche… It’s great to be passionate about a subject or topic, but ask yourself these questions: A. Is my passion big enough? B. Is it a wide enough topic? C. Can I expand the topic and pivot easily to cover related topics? D. Is there enough search volume for this particular niche and can it be monetized easily? E. can I really blog about this topic, niche, etc. for years? – It’s great to blog and write things that your passionate about, but if you’re “Blogging as a business”, we need to look at certain metrics and monetization possibilities and then choose our niche. Maybe your passion fits within a larger niche that can be monetized more easily. For example, if your passionate about crystals, essential oils, etc. That;s fine, but you may want to make your blog about health and spirituality or self-help, as that’s a larger niche that can be monetized easily with plenty of keywords with large search volume.
  8. Not investing in blogging education and blogging courses. If you’re serious about blogging as a business and really want to be a successful blogger, you may want to consider enrolling in an online blogging course. Before you do that, be cautious. There are a lot of “gurus” out there that try to sell blogging courses for $2,000 and up. There’s no need to pay that much for a blogging course.
